There is something about TED Talks that I find to be truly amazing. I don’t know what it is exactly, but I really do love them. I’ve yet to find a TED Talk that I didn’t enjoy. With this love, part of what I’ll be doing this year is to listen to a talk (or this month, four talks) related to the monthly theme and then write a little response. I hope a few things will happen for us. First, I get to listen to a TED Talk – something I love doing. Second, you can watch or listen to the talk yourself. Third, should you choose to listen to the talk you can think to yourself “Man alive, Rachel and I are kindred spirits!” or “Rachel is crazy” and you can hit unsubscribe.

I recently had the pleasure of listening to Laura Vanderkam talk about gaining control of your free time. That’s something we could all use a little help with, right? We all do our best, I think I do it well enough to have something to contribute to the wide world, but there’s always room for improvement.
Laura has this notion that “we don’t build the lives we want by saving time. We build the lives we want, and then time saves itself.” I have to admit, I am intrigued by this. There is a part of me, and it’s not the most rational, that believes in the idea of pulling yourself up by your bootstraps. Then I remember that the United States is a terrible place when it comes to some semblance of work/life balance. Then I remember that the life I want to build involved at least one of my children using the toilet all the time and that child doesn’t love that idea. Then I remember every single crushing demand on my time.
And then I remember that I spent 30 minutes just sitting there yesterday playing Two Dots. Not that there’s anything wrong with just sitting there. But what would have happened if I would have put my phone to the side for 15 minutes and written down some goals? What if I had decided to take 15 minutes of my life and prioritize what needs to be prioritized in my life to have a successful week?
I think it’s exactly like Laura says, “small moments can have great power.” What are some small moments in your life that have come to be really powerful?
