Getting to know. . . me!

This first post is just going to be an introduction about me.  I think it’s important to see what makes people tick so that you can understand a little bit about them and where they’re coming from.

I’m currently a student at Metropolitan State University in St. Paul, MN.  I’m pursuing a B.A. in Gender Studies and I’m looking forward to finishing my degree within the next year.

If you read “The Life and Times of Rebecca Walker” (which you can link to on my “Published Works” page) you’ll notice that Rebecca Walker is a rape victim. This is because I’m a victim of rape myself and I think that if some of the social stigma surrounding rape would be removed if people shared their stories and helped others to understand that it’s not the fault of the victim.

You’ll also notice that my characters talk very candidly about how they feel about themselves.  I feel that if people actually faced what they were feeling about any number of things we would all be better people.

Serious things aside, I do also have fun.  To give you just a glimpse, when I was writing the title for this entry “Getting to Know You” from “The King and I” started playing in my head.  I love musicals and if there was only one type of entertainment available that would be my pick.

I also enjoy reading, writing, and spending time with my husband.  We’re both sci-fi lovers and we particularly enjoy watching Star Trek together.

In addition to writing and going to school I also work full time as a receptionist at a local community college.  I really enjoy the opportunity to help students be successful in their academic journey.
